After being inspired by Langston Hughes poem Mother to Son, the 8th grade class wrote their own extended metaphor poems.
Students knocked it out of the park with their poems. Many created metaphors about their friends, and favorite/least favorite places. Audra Deavers poem, Playing Basketball is a Roller Coaster, perfectly captured the end of a great season...
Playing basketball is a roller coaster
It starts of slow with lots of practices
The ascent to the first game feels like forever
Our anticipation is through the roof
Then all of a sudden, we are falling
Flying so fast it feels as if we will never stop
Game after game, twist after turn
It feels like a dream, with lots of ups and downs
But now we are slowing down
The ride is over, and now we're done
I look back remembering the whirlwind of a ride
I want to go again, but I can't
The roller coaster is closed, just like basketball
I have to wait until next year
All I can think about now, is how much I miss it
